McPherson County Conservation District held their winter workshop on February 12th, 2024 at Prime Time Bar and Grill in Eureka, SD. Robin Salverson from SDSU Extension spoke on the importance of water quality for your livestock. Producers learned the importance of monitoring your water for excess salts and other nutrients. Producers were informed that there are a few options to test the level of salt in their water available to them right in our county. Our local NRCS office and our local SDSU Extension Office, located in the McPherson County Courthouse, both have meters available for producers to have their water tested. Producers also learned about the resources available to them from the South Dakota Soil Health Coalition. South Dakota Soil Health coalition has created a social media platform titled “Growing Connections.” In this smartphone app producers can create an account and ask advice and/or questions from local experts on a variety of agricultural topics, from urban gardening to cover crop use and much more. The South Dakota Soil Health Coalition labels this app as ‘twitter for farmers and ranchers.
South Dakota Soil Health Coalition also has a great resource for livestock producers and those who have grazing acres available. SD Grazing Exchange was created to connect those who have grazing acres available and are looking for a producer with livestock to graze it, and for livestock producers who are looking for grazing acres and being able to connect the two. The SD Grazing Exchange and the Growing Connections app have a web-based platform as well, both available on South Dakota Soil Health Coalition’s website: www.sdsoilhealthcoalition.org.
